Compare and Contrast

As part of our ‘Inside War’ Unit we explored a wonderful picture book -'The Enemy' By David Cali and Serge Bloch

Davide Cali and Serge Bloch present a fable about two lonely soldiers facing each other across a barren battlefield. What each discovers, as the story unfolds, is that the enemy is not a faceless beast, but rather a real person with family, friends, and dreams.

After a discussion, which broke down the themes and messages within the story we watched a short film titled ‘Offside’
In this short film, two Israeli soldiers are patrolling the security zone that separates them from Palestine. To pass the time, they listen to a portable radio which is broadcasting a live soccer match between arch-rivals Brazil and Italy. This is an amazing award winning film which provided fantastic discussion.

We then completed a Open Compare and Contrast Activity to provide further higher order thinking and develop deeper interpretations.
