Using Edger Alan Poe's rules for short stories, short short exemplars and a few TV commercials we discussed and explored the aspect which make up an effective short story. We then worked on analysing a short story using a graphic organiser.
Here are the 6 rules for short story writing a short story – compiled by Edgar Allen Poe in late 1800’s:
- Be complete by itself
- Be able to be read in one sitting
- Have every word used for important effect.
- Have a good opening sentence that is developed throughout the work
- End at its climax
- Have no more characters than those necessary for the action.
