Exploration of Short Stories

Now we are really getting into the deeper features and structure of Short Stories.
Using Edger Alan Poe's rules for short stories, short short exemplars and a few TV commercials we discussed and explored the aspect which make up an effective short story. We then worked on analysing a short story using a graphic organiser.

Here are the 6 rules for short story writing a short story – compiled by Edgar Allen Poe in late 1800’s:

  1. Be complete by itself
  2. Be able to be read in one sitting
  3. Have every word used for important effect.
  4. Have a good opening sentence that is developed throughout the work
  5. End at its climax
  6. Have no more characters than those necessary for the action.
